These pit-fired, terra cotta pieces have developed from my work on the Earth Mother series of sculptures. Both contain elements of previous works, but the concentration of design is more line and form, rather than the more decorative aspects of my work. I have also embarked on an investigation of different surface treatments. None of the pieces are glazed, some areas are decorated using a complex system of colored layers, which are then rubbed down, waxed and buffed to a high gloss, to give the appearance of polished stone. Other areas are treated using oil-based gels, others, metallic paints and areas are left as they came from the firing.
