Within
herself and those she knew, Mary Magdalene was a
woman of conflict. Her relationship to Jesus and his
disciples, and her status within that group of early
Christians, continues to trouble clerics and authors.
Some say she was a woman of easy virtue, a shrew.
Others describe her as having saintly virtues. She is
variously described as the cause of much bickering
and aggravation, or as the "den-mother" of the
all-male group. Whatever the truth, conflict, and its
subsequent resolution, is a concept which has been
particularly associated with her character throughout
history.
In this series, I investigate the nature of conflict. As individuals and societies, our belief systems, character traits, and methods of governance bring us together - and pull us apart. Within this series, I use barbed wire to represent this conflict. Threaded through the wire is lamb's wool, to suggest humankind's conciliatory nature. While our conflict is ongoing and everlasting, it is tempered by a need for peace and tranquility.
